Some cases are expedited in critical situations.

It is common knowledge that an SSD application could take long months of processing. In some critical cases, this process is sped up due to the critical nature of the case.
Common cases of such critical nature are in cases where an applicant has a terminal illness(TERI), is in dire need of assistance , is a threat to personal or public safety or qualifies for "compassionate allowance." (The Social Security Office determines which cases are critical.)

Definition: "Compassionate Allowance" - This is a case where the social security office has determined to be serious enough for quick approval even with very little medical evidence.
